The 2023 International Electrolytic Cell Innovation and Development Conference was held in Suzhou, Jiangsu from July 26th to 27th, attracting guests from various fields such as hydrogen production enterprises, green hydrogen project parties, and EPC general contractors to participate in the grand event. Focusing on cutting-edge technologies, market trends, and future development strategies in the field of alkaline electrolysis water hydrogen production, participants jointly delved into exploring the potential and opportunities of electrolysis cells, as well as the important role played by green hydrogen projects in sustainable development.
Bian Tiezheng, Deputy General Manager of Jiangsu Tianhe Yuan Hydrogen Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Tianhe Yuan Hydrogen), was invited to attend and give a speech. The speech focuses on analyzing the cost competitiveness of green hydrogen. Looking back at the current development status of global hydrogen energy, Bian Tiezheng stated that in recent years, the layout of hydrogen energy has gradually become an important strategic choice for many countries to achieve carbon neutrality goals and ensure energy security. China has also proposed medium to long-term goals for hydrogen energy development. Currently, 43 countries have released hydrogen energy strategies, including 28 countries in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, 8 countries in the Americas, and 7 countries in the Asia Pacific region. With the continuous intensification of global climate change and energy demand, more and more countries are paying attention to the hydrogen energy industry as a key strategy in energy transformation.
he government's support and incentive measures will promote hydrogen energy technology innovation and industrial upgrading, drive more investment and cooperation, and further expand the scale and market share of the hydrogen energy industry. In the EU's REPowerEU program, the Carbon Price Difference Contract (CCfD) mechanism was introduced to provide stable electricity prices for clean hydrogen producers and encourage the production and use of clean hydrogen. The attention and investment of multiple countries in the hydrogen energy industry demonstrate their determination to address climate change and energy transformation, and also provide enormous opportunities for the development of the global hydrogen energy industry. As more countries join, hydrogen energy will play an increasingly important role in the global energy system.
From the 2021 data, it can be seen that the main production and consumption sectors of global hydrogen come from fossil fuels. The total production of hydrogen in that year was 94 million tons, with natural gas producing hydrogen accounting for as much as 62%, coal producing hydrogen accounting for 19%, industrial by-product hydrogen accounting for 18%, and electrolytic water producing hydrogen accounting for only 0.04%. And the demand side is also concentrated in the chemical industry. The demand for refining and chemical products accounts for 33%, synthetic ammonia accounts for 27%, and transportation accounts for less than 0.01%. The global and Chinese hydrogen energy utilization structures are mainly focused on the refining and synthetic ammonia hydrogen industries, accounting for 42% and 36% respectively, followed by the methanol industry. The synthetic ammonia and methanol industries will face significant market opportunities. With the continuous progress of green hydrogen technology and the continuous decrease in costs, these industries will rely more on the application of green hydrogen in the process of transformation and upgrading.
When it comes to the cost of green hydrogen, Bian Tiezheng gave a detailed introduction to the performance of mainstream alkaline electrolytic water hydrogen production equipment. The DC power consumption of these devices is approximately 5kWh/Nm ³, The cost of electricity accounts for approximately 85% of the total cost, so its economy is greatly affected by electricity prices. With the popularization and application of renewable energy, the rate of waste light has been increasing year by year, and how to store the energy that cannot be consumed has become an urgent problem to be solved. In the above context, photovoltaic hydrogen production has become one of the important ways to reduce the cost of hydrogen production. By utilizing discarded solar energy for hydrogen production, costs can be effectively reduced, providing more attractive development space for the photovoltaic industry. At present, the DC power consumption of the Tianqing alkaline water hydrogen production equipment, which has been mass-produced by Tianhe Yuanhydrogen, can reach 4.37kWh/Nm ³, Leading position among similar products.
By comparing the advantages and disadvantages of different hydrogen production methods such as fossil fuel hydrogen production, industrial by-product hydrogen production, electrolytic water hydrogen production, biomass energy, and photolysis water, it can be seen that from an environmental perspective, electrolytic water hydrogen production is more in line with current market trends, with high technological maturity, stable processes, and low technical risks, and can achieve large-scale application. And it has certain advantages in investment and operating costs. More attractive in commercial operations, providing important support for enterprises to achieve sustainable development.
Based on the analysis of the current global hydrogen energy situation, the development status and cost of green hydrogen, and the downstream application of green hydrogen, Bian Tiezheng summarized: The prospects and value of the green hydrogen industry are worth looking forward to, mainly due to the decrease in renewable energy electricity costs and the maturity of the carbon market. With the advancement of technology and market competition, the cost of green hydrogen production continues to decrease, making green hydrogen more competitive in the energy market. At the same time, the global demand for reducing carbon emissions continues to rise, and the development of the carbon market provides more support and opportunities for green hydrogen Under the backdrop, the green hydrogen industry is gradually showing enormous development potential globally
