Technological Transformation of Alkaline Electrolytic Water Hydrogen Production Equipment.

Under the goal of carbon peak and carbon neutrality, the hydrogen energy industry is accelerating its development, and the role of green hydrogen in carbon reduction is receiving attention. Under policy incentives, the development of China's green hydrogen industry continues to accelerate, driving a significant increase in market demand for electrolytic water hydrogen production industry. According to research conducted by GGII, the market demand for electrolytic water hydrogen production equipment in China is expected to reach 730 megawatts in 2022, nearly doubling compared to 2021. In this context, it is particularly crucial to produce green hydrogen on a large scale and at a low cost. This also puts forward higher requirements for the performance, efficiency, and reliability of hydrogen production equipment.

At present, there are three main types of hydrogen production technologies for electrolytic water: alkaline electrolytic water, proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolytic water, and solid oxide electrolytic water. Among them, alkaline electrolytic water hydrogen production is currently the most mature electrolytic hydrogen production technology in China, which has obvious advantages in cost, lifespan, accuracy, and reliability.

According to the "China Hydrogen Energy and Fuel Cell Industry Development Report (2020)" and the "Renewable Hydrogen 100 Action Initiative", the installed capacity of renewable energy hydrogen production in China is expected to reach 100 gigawatts by 2030, and the scale of renewable energy hydrogen production will exceed 100 million tons by 2060. Among them, the alkaline electrolysis water hydrogen production system has entered the stage of commercial operation and is an important way to achieve large-scale hydrogen production from renewable energy.

According to Bloomberg New Energy Finance statistics, in 2021, global electrolytic cell shipments exceeded 458 megawatts, with alkaline electrolytic cell shipments accounting for nearly 70%, approximately 317 megawatts. It is expected that the global shipment volume of electrolytic cells will exceed 2 gigawatts by 2022, and the proportion of alkaline electrolytic cells will increase to around 75%.

Currently, driven by the "dual carbon" goal, various industries are accelerating their carbon reduction actions. In addition to transportation, the industrial sector with a huge demand for hydrogen has also begun to attach importance to the development of green hydrogen, which also means that green hydrogen has become an important direction for the transformation of traditional energy enterprises. The "Guiding Opinions on Promoting the High Quality Development of the Petrochemical and Chemical Industry during the 14th Five Year Plan" proposes to encourage petrochemical and chemical enterprises to develop and utilize green hydrogen in a reasonable and orderly manner according to local conditions, and promote the coupling demonstration of refining, coal chemical industry, green electricity, green hydrogen and other industries.

Driven by market demand, it is particularly crucial to produce green hydrogen on a large scale and at a low cost. The construction of large-scale photovoltaic and wind power will be a strong support for the large-scale application of green hydrogen in the future, and also a powerful measure to force traditional high energy consumption and carbon emission industries such as chemical industry to upgrade their industries. However, at the same time, the volatility of new energy power generation also puts forward higher requirements for the performance, stability, and reliability of hydrogen production equipment. With the continuous expansion of the deployment scale of electrolytic water hydrogen production, in order to meet the future demand for large-scale green hydrogen production, China's hydrogen production equipment needs to continuously improve in terms of cost, energy consumption, hydrogen production efficiency, and other technical aspects.
